Only three months are left till I write the applications for universities. It has been giving me so much stress; I have not been feeling well. I have been tired and sick of doing things. The weather is not helping me either because I do not adjust well to a hot weather. Anyways, the time keeps on passing and I really feel like I have gotten nothing done. I do not know if I am being a pessimist, but I have been depressed.
I am getting better nowadays, but seeing how others got a lot of things done that will help them later in the future, I can not help doubting myself. As a result I have decided to think positively because there is nothing better than being an optimist. I have experienced that being around an optimist also helps you and others feel better. Therefore, I would like to make myself and others feel better. I hope I can get a hold of myself and work hard. I need to think positively and never lose focus. Working hard never hurt anybody.

My second common application essay
Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you, and explain that influence.
When I first went to America, the culture was so different from what I was used to in Korea. During my first year it started to worry me, and it got worse when I attended elementary school. At that time, I did not know how to speak and write English fluently. This demerit upset me, but thanks to my homeroom teacher I overcame it quickly. She helped me with my English, so I would not have difficulties later on in the school year. For example, when there was a homework assignment, she would look after the work I did and discuss it with me. As my first homework assignment, I had to create a paper t-shirt and write my book report on it. At first I was not sure I could because I could not write English well. However, I completed my homework and turned it in. I saw her looking over it and saw her smiling. At first I thought she might think it was unprepared, but she told me later that she was glad I did my best. She even complimented me on my drawing. I was glad she did not think it was awful. On the later assignments she would explain to me what I should have done and what I should not have done. She encouraged me and supported me on everything I did that year. At that time I did not think much of it, but later on I realized she had an impact on me. Without her pushing me to be confident, I would not have learned English as fast as I did.

Korean wave, known as Hallyu, is all over the world. Korea’s celebrities and movie producers and such are one of the parts trying to influence cultures of other countries and introduce them to the Korean culture. It has been successful in the Asian market, but it did not succeed yet in the western countries.
Recently, Park Jin Young, a producer and CEO of a music recording company, was on the Billboard magazine. The advertisement was about how he would record and co-produce a 15-year-old girl, named Min, with an American producer Lil Jon. It advertises Min and how she is going to debut in America first and not Korea. Also it mentions how Park Jin Young is bringing his label to the U.S. and that his JYP Manhattan Center is opening. Also, an article, ‘Korean music mogul to NYC’, was written about him in a business newspaper named Crain’s. This article also mentions Park Jin Young’s company JYP and how he is planning to set up JYP USA in Manhattan, New York. The article mentioned that he called the building ‘The Gateway to Asia’ or an academy. The building consists of eight quarters for teenage artists, choreography room, recording studio, and an office for eight JYP USA staff. It also says he is famous between American labels and that they want to work with him. Park Jin Young was previously known for producing music in albums for singers Mase, Will Smith, and Cassie. And now that he is starting his label in America everybody is watching him. It is great to see how one man can influence many people. I would like to think he is one the people who can introduce our country to America. I hope he succeeds and open up the Hallyu industry more, so that our country’s economy can get better.

My first common application essay
Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you.
New experiences give you chances to explore the possibilities within yourself. That chance was given to me when I went to America. Since I went at a young age I was not really sure what it would be like. New home, new teachers and new friends; it all seemed so much to me.
When I arrived at the airport, everything fascinated me. From just looking around the terminal I could sense that the culture was different from what I was used to. For example, there were people with different nationalities who I was not accustomed to seeing in Korea. Also on my ride to my new home I was surprised by how there was less traffic. The new surrounding I had never seen before both scared me and excited me. I was worried I would not get used to it and thought about many challenges to come.
The major difficulty I had when I first went to America was language. In Korea, I only studied English I could learn at age ten, which did not help much. Unfortunately, that is what I had to deal with and start from the beginning. My parents thought it would be a great idea to learn the language by interacting with others who spoke it. Therefore they signed my brother and me up for summer programs at a park around our home that gave us a chance to meet people. At first I met all kinds of people who I had trouble communicating with. As time went on, my brother and I got used to going to the park everyday and talking to them. We still were not fluent, but we could make others understand.
Then first day of school came and I got very nervous. I was worried about rest of the school life because I had no idea how I was going to get anything done. For example, I really did not know how I was going to do homework when I did not understand the directions. However, with the help from my homeroom teacher I got through. She understood how difficult it was for me, but urged me to try to write in English and speak in English. She told me it would be difficult at first, but if I believed in myself then I would overcome it. I did all the homework assignments and studied to improve my pronunciation during ESL classes. I was glad she thought me the way to overcome my fears and challenge myself to get the results. It gave me an opportunity to show others and myself that I could do something if I set my mind to it. Any experience that seems difficult at first always seems to help you later in the future.
